Yesterday, the world lost an amazing woman, Ms. Maya Angelou. If you don’t know who she is; to say she was a phenomenal poet would be doing her injustice.

As she once said, “Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. I’m not built to suit a fashion model’s size. But when I start to tell them, They think I’m telling lies.I say, It’s in the reach of my arms, The span of my hips, The stride of my step, The curl of my lips. I’m a woman. Phenomenally.”

This is a stanza from her poem Phenomenal Woman. This poem means a lot to not only me but to women and girls everywhere. Today’s society has such unrealistic standards of how we as women should look. Scrolling through Facebook or instagram I notice more and more people editing their pictures drastically; i wonder is it to get “likes” or is it to make themselves confident? Some of the most beautiful people I know, still end up editing their pictures to an exaggerated extent. Things like photoshop and picture filters are taking the beauty out of the world and putting in an unrealistic definition of how people should look. Nobody has perfect skin, perfect eyebrows, evenly proportioned eyes, flat stomachs, too many or not enough curves, hair color exactly perfect, perfect nose, or perfect posture. If you are changing yourself to appease “the crowd”… then how to expect other people to see the beauty in you, if you don’t see it in yourself?

I can see beauty where others see ugliness. That either makes me an artist or a person with very poor taste. I live the words of the common phrase, don’t judge anyone unless you’ve walked in their shoes. Working in retail, I deal with my fair share of cranky customers and happy customers. It amazes me how rude people can be, yet so genuinely happy others can be. One of my customers said to me “Life is nice after you retire.” I said, “why’s that?” He replied with, “because I am never in a hurry to get anywhere. When I get there, I get there. I let people switch lanes in front of me and walk slow. Why rush to get anywhere? Why make yourself miserable?” I never thought about this but he was right… when I get there… I get there. Sometimes we get caught up in our everyday lives that we forget to see the beauty and the magic in the world. Seeing the skyline of my city or traveling and seeing all that nature has to offer, is so incredible. The way trees blow in the breeze or the way that birds sing in the morning as if they are happy to see the sun again. That is all so magical. It is unbelievable that we live in such an amazing place. Yet, we forget to notice the beauty in it.

Don’t forget to see the beauty in the world today. But, more importantly, don’t forget to see the beauty in yourself.
